Tiffany Sawyer, a Cleveland Signature HealthCare employee who lives in Hixson, has been named to the Tennessee State Veterans Home Board as a member with clinical experience in nursing homes.

Co-workers showed their support for the appointment with a surprise reception on Tuesday.

Sawyer said she is not sure who suggested to Gov. Bill Haslam’s office that she serve on the board.

“One of my many passions is for those who have been in the military and served our country. I believe that without them we wouldn’t be where we are,” Sawyer said. “I’m excited to be able to provide service to those who serve our country.”

The appointment is also special to Sawyer because she grew up in a military family. Her father was in the Air Force.

“Being a military brat, I didn’t have grandparents and stuff like that where you know your next-door neighbors that you go to every weekend, etc., so these [clients] become your extended family, and you have that relationship within the generations,” Sawyer said.

She has lived in the Chattanooga area since 1996.

Sawyer said she does not have a clear idea of what her role on the board will be. This and other information about serving on the board will be a part of orientation on July 24 in Knoxville. She is looking forward to getting more details and using her skills and experience to help the board.

“I consider it very important to ensure that Tennessee’s boards and commissions are filled with the most dedicated and qualified citizens,” Haslam said in a letter notifying Sawyer of the appointment. “I believe that your participation is certain to leave a positive impact on this board and the work it does.”

The position does not mean she has to relocate, but it will require travel for meetings every other month. The appointment is for a three-year term.
