Erby Eugene “Gene” Fugate, 79, of Calhoun, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.
A native of Ooltewah and longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Erby and Pauline Cerette Fugate. He was preceded in death by three sons: Terry Eugene, Steven Eugene and Tommy Ray Fugate; one brother, Larry Fugate; and three sisters: Willadean Lee, Shirley Cantrell and Paulette Presley.
He served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a very hard worker in order to provide for his family. He was a construction worker in Labor Local #846 for 35 years, where he worked at DuPont in Chattanooga, Watts Bar Nuclear Plant in Spring City and at Copper Hill Mines for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Ann Fugate of Calhoun; four grandchildren: Rhonda and Mike Pilkey of Oak Ridge, Amanda and Joey Murphy of Oliver Springs, David Fugate of Quebec and Taylor and Becca Fugate of Cleveland; five great-grandchildren: Skylar, Austin, Lacey, Jaylen and Chancen; four sisters and two brothers-in-law: Juanita Hood of Ooltewah, Faye and Paul Jenkins of Ooltewah, Margie and Tony Brown of Ooltewah and Beverly Kesley of Delano; and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at 7 Tuesday night, Aug. 12, 2014, in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home in Athens with the Rev. James Hugh officiating.
Burial will be at noon on Wednesday in the Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Toby McLaughlin, Bud James, Michael Lunsford, Joey Murphy, William Fugate and Michael Black.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
