Raiford “Ray” Carter, 81, of Athens passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2014.

He was born May 13, 1933, in Moultrie, Ga.

He was preceded in death by Charlie and Mamie Garrette Carter, brothers: Jesse Carter, Gene Carter; and sister, Hazel Cooper.

A military veteran having served during the Korean war. Known as the “mater” man selling produce from his little white truck in the Madisonville/Athens area.

Survivors include his wife, Maudine Carter; daughter, Patricia Clay and husband, Jim, of Armuchee, Ga.; son, Bobby Ray Carter of Sarasota, Fla.; daughter, Barbara Boruff and husband, Dale, of Athens; daughter, Rebecca Gail Peterson of Sweetwater; daughter, Shelia Weir and husband, David, of Athens; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Companion Funeral Home, 2419 Georgetown Road NW in Cleveland.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. service time.
