Cleveland got an early lesson in patience in their opening match, which is usually something that is put to the test later in the season.
After going 70 scoreless minutes, the Lady Raiders’ patience finally paid off as they were able to top East Ridge 2-0.
Out of a total of 15 shots taken by Cleveland, 12 of those were on goal and according to head coach Andy Byrd, too many of those shots did not find the back of the net.
“We learned a lesson of patience tonight — scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes to put an early victory up on the result board. I’ll take it,” Coach Byrd proclaimed.
The Lady Raiders are currently down four players due to injury, but saw their two goals come from rather unexpected sources.
It was freshman Mary Claire Shaffer who got the first goal past the Lady Pioneer keeper.
“Mary Claire Shaffer played in a JV game for 20 to 30 minutes, then comes in and plays in the varsity match and scores a big goal,” Byrd described. “She was in the right place at the right time, had good timing and finished it.”
The second goal came from senior Jenna Scoggins, who normally is in goal for Cleveland.
Senior Sohara Perez assisted on both goals.
Sophomore keeper Isabel Tellez got the nod Tuesday night, as Scoggins was used to fill the hole left by Sam DeBien, who is recovering from an injury.
“Isabel came in and did great with a couple of really good saves,” the Lady Raider coach stated.
According to Coach Byrd, the plan at this point is to continue utilizing Scoggins in a different way.
“We’re going to try to get Isabel in the goal (more often) and have Jenna up on the field, just to bring a different look to our attack,” Byrd explained. “We’ve got a lot to put together this season, but we’re good enough to where we can confidently do different things in the game.”
Cleveland will work to get healthy and up to full speed so that they will be ready to tangle with McMinn Central.
The Lady Chargers will travel to the Greater Cleveland Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. match next Tuesday.
