Legislators Bell and Howell speak to RTA

The Cleveland-Bradley Retired Teachers’ Association met on Aug. 14 for a luncheon meeting at Westwood Baptist Church. Deborah Flower, president, presided and opened the meeting with a welcome to members. Wilma Cross gave the devotional.

After the luncheon, Duane Schriver introduced speakers Sen. Mike Bell and newly elected Rep. Dan Howell. Schriver thanked Bell for being a force for education and his support in 2014 legislation.

Bell made some remarks on legislation that occurred this year. He discussed the pension system and benefits for Tennessee state employees and teachers. He highlighted several bills that were passed in the 2014 Legislature concerning education.

Bell mentioned, also, four constitutional amendments that will be on the November ballot.

Howell addressed the group, also. He gave a brief personal introduction and indicated his interest in and support for educational issues.

RTA member Duane Schriver facilitated a question and-answer-period.During the business portion of the meeting, Carolyn Goins, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved. Treasurer Joy Yates presented the treasurer’s report which was approved. After a discussion of old and new business, the meeting was adjourned and door prizes were distributed.

The next scheduled meeting will be Oct. 9, at Westwood Baptist Church at 11:30 a.m. Rebecca Palmer, a representative from Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, will speak on funeral preplanning. Her topic will be “Are You Prepared?” This will be an informative presentation.

The local association meets bimonthly and membership is open to any retired teacher.
