Tennessee Highway Patrol Media Officer Dalya Qualls reported the shutdown was caused by a crash involving two tractor-trailer rigs.
According to reports, the first commercial big rig, manned by Christopher Hunter, 33, of Summerville, Ga., slammed into the median and jackknifed across the roadway shortly before 5 a.m. The 2006 white International 9400 tractor trailer registered to BAH Express blocked both lanes of travel.
The second rig, operated by Carol Lyn Wells, 29, of Thomson, Ga., struck the first tractor-trailer as it blocked the roadway between mile marker 19 and 20. The 2012 Freightliner Cascadia 125 tractor-trailer registered to Central Leasing then reportedly ran off of the roadway and into an embankment.
Qualls said the accidents are being investigated as two separate crashes.
One of the drivers was reportedly airlifted to Erlanger hospital by Life Force helicopter.
Both northbound lanes were opened for travel by 10 a.m.
