Cleveland’s Lady Raiders (3-0) were able to post an impressive performance against McMinn Central (0-3) Tuesday night, as they topped the Englewood team 5-1.
“It was a good little win,” Cleveland head coach Andy Byrd stated. “Overall, there was some good stuff. We enjoyed it and I think the kids were able to learn a lot.”
In the 80 minutes of play, the Lady Raiders were able to get their younger players some quality time on the pitch.
“We played everyone on the bench, and were able to put people in different places,” Coach Byrd commented.
Cleveland took quick control of the ball and just two minutes in, senior Tanya Anchondo fed the ball through to freshman Thalia Morales, who was able to get it past Central’s keeper.
After having made two saves for the Lady Raiders, Jenna Scoggins was pulled from the goal and added to the team’s attack.
In the 29th minute, Scoggins scored her first of goal of the game, which was quickly followed up with a second goal two minutes later.
At the half, Cleveland had a firm 3-0 lead over the young McMinn Central team.
“We had a good attack there in the first half. Then I switched things up and we continued to score and do good things with the ball,” Byrd explained.
The Chargerettes were able to hold back the Lady Raiders for the first 20 minutes of the second half, until Scoggins got the ball to fellow senior Jessica Barbosa, who then scored the team’s fourth goal.
Central’s Jessica Young broke through the Cleveland defenders in the 75th minute to give the Chargerettes their lone goal of the match.
The Lady Raiders answered 10 seconds later with their fifth and final goal, which came from Rosa Gallegos.
Cleveland outshot McMinn Central 19-8, with a total of 16 shots on goal in comparison to Central’s five.
Sophomore keeper Isabel Tellez took over in goal for Scoggins and freshman Lauren Stutzman was able to see some time in front of the net as well.
The Lady Raiders will be kept busy in a tournament at Chattanooga Christian this weekend, before traveling to take on District 5-AAA rival McMinn County next Tuesday.
