A Cleveland resident for 54 years, the late Becky Cooke Smith was a former business partner to the Panera Bread franchise of East Tennessee and to Cooke’s Food Store, as well as additional commercial ventures, and was a widely recognized, well-respected community leader within Cleveland and Bradley County. She was also an active member of the Cleveland area business community.
She received the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce’s M.C. Headrick Free Enterprise Award and was a lifelong member of Cleveland First United Methodist Church.
Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004 and began radiation and chemotherapy. Her strong will and independent spirit allowed her to continue to work daily until a stroke in January 2007 limited her vision. Her death in April 2007 surprised many because she held her battle very close.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Chattanooga affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure which continues to work for education, screening and treatment support for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
The tournament also supports the Becky C. Smith Scholarship fund designed to aid a student athlete of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team seeking a degree in accounting or business at UTC.
Registration for the select-shot tournament will begin at 11 a.m. A barbecue lunch will begin at 11:30. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests will be held for men and women participants, as well as a Hole-in-One competition which includes a chance to win a car or $10,000.
The deadline for entry is Sept. 13. Entries may be mailed to Becky C. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament, P.O. Box 2365, Cleveland TN 37320.
