Investigators have identified the body of a female found floating Saturday in the Hiwassee River, according to District Attorney General Steve Crump.
Crump said her family has identified her as Latasha Nichols. This morning, he confirmed her identity through information received from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Nichols is from Bradley County, according to Crump.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of investigation, Crump made a request for assistance in Polk County over the weekend.
“A citizen reported seeing a body floating in the river,” according to Susan Niland of the TBI.
West Polk Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Lofty said Saturday the body was recovered and then sent to Nashville for autopsy.
Lofty said the body had been caught in an area called a “strainer.”
Lofty also said the body was located just a few yards inside Polk County, near the Bradley County line.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
