Cleveland Utilities’ Sewer Division will be conducting smoke tests in its sanitary sewer system beginning Tuesday for a period of approximately three months. The smoke testing will occur at various locations throughout the Cleveland Utilities sewer system.

When sewer crews are performing the test, harmless smoke may rise from manholes, storm drains, roof drains, vent pipes, or from cracks in the ground. Smoke may also enter a building if there is a defect in the building plumbing. Any presence of smoke within a building should be reported to the crew conducting the tests or by calling Cleveland Utilities at 478-9387.

Avoid unnecessary exposure to the smoke. Sewer testing smoke is relatively harmless but all smoke can be irritating to nasal passages. Any irritation caused by sewer testing smoke is temporary and quickly disappears after exposure has ceased.
