Former Lee University hurler Scott Swinson has become the third member of the Flames' 2010 pitching staff to ink a free-agent Major League contract.

He was signed by the Boston Red Sox over the weekend and will report immediately to Florida's Gulf Coast Rookie League.

“We are really happy for Scott,” said Lee coach Mark Brew. “He is very deserving of this opportunity and we feel like he has a solid future in professional baseball.”

Swinson, who transferred to Lee from the University of Maryland, posted an 11-0 record in helping direct the Flames to a 52-13 season and a second-place finish in the NAIA World Series.

He impressed scouts with a tremendous pitching effort against No. 1 ranked Lewis-Clark State in the World Series.

Overall the right-hander posted a 2.63 earned run average. In 96 innings, he was tops on the Lee staff with 92 strikeouts and only 15 walks.

The native of Ellicott, Maryland has been assigned to the Fort Myers, Fla., player development complex. He joins lefty Matt Gilson, right-hander Aaron Everett and shortstop Jose Cuevas, who earlier signed contracts.
