Liars Table holds straw poll on county, state primary elections

The Liars Table held its straw poll on the upcoming Bradley County General Election and state Republican and Democratic primaries. The votes cast in the straw poll were for contested races only.

The group of local residents meet regularly to discuss community happening and politics at the Old Fort Restaurant.

The straw poll taken during the county primary election was 90 percent, according to Liars Club participant Eddie Cartwright.

“We have a reasonably good cross-section of the community,” he said.

For the county general election the contested races include county mayor; sheriff; County Commission Second District, Third District, Fifth District and Sixth District; and county school board Second District, fourth District and Sixth District. The Charleston City residents have a race for commissioner; and Cleveland residents a race for mayor and First District commissioner.

The Republican primary contested races include governor, U.S. House of Representatives 3rd District, Tennessee Senate 9th Senatorial District, state Executive committeeman for 9th district and state executive committeewoman for 9th district.

The results of the poll follow:

County mayor's race showed 26 votes for Republican D. Gary Davis and one for Independent Erin Fuller.

County Commission race for 2nd District, where two seats will be filled, showed Louie Alford, Republican, 18; Connie Wilson, 18, Republican; and Pam Edgemon, Democrat, 9.

In the 3rd District commission race, two seats up for election, showed Tommy Anderson, Republican, 3; Brian Smith, Republican, 19; and Jeff D. Morelock, Democratic, 22.

For 5th District commissioner, where two seats are at stake, showed Bill Ledford, Republican, 20; Jeff Yarber, Republican, 8; Mark I. Neeley, Democratic, 12.

For 6th District commissioner, where two seats are to be chosen, the vote was Melvin Griffin, Republican, 11; Robert D. Rominger, Republican, 16; and Donald Caywood, Independent, 8.

In the sheriff's race, the vote was Jim Ruth, Republican, 3; and Steve Lawson, Democratic, 24.

In the nonpartisan county school board 2nd District race, the results were William T. Bates Jr., 5; Vicki Beaty, 13; Richard McAlister, 2; and Hal O. Taylor, 3.

The nonpartisan 4th District county school board race showed David Crane, 5; and Troy Weathers, 13.

The nonpartisan 6th District race showed Christy Griffith Critchfield, 6; Nathan Headrick, 3; and Barry Phillips, 6.

In the Charleston City nonpartisan commission race, the results were Walter S. Goode, 10; and Tony Whitener, 2.

In the Cleveland nonpartisan mayor's race, the vote was Tony Ownby, 5; and Tom Rowland, 21.

The first district nonpartisan Cleveland Council race showed Charlie M. McKenzie, 16; and Floyd Wade Jr., 6.

The results of the Republican Primary follow:

Governor — Bill Haslam, 17; and Zach Wamp, 10. No votes were given to Joe Kirkpatrick, Basil Marceaux Sr. or Ron Ramsey.

3rd District U.S. Representative — Chuck Fleischmann, 2; Tim Gobble, 8, Art Rhodes, 6 and Robin Smith, 12. No votes were given to Tommy Crangle, Harvey Howard, Jean Howard-Hill, Van Irion, Rick Kernea, Basil Marceau Sr. or Grover Travillian.

9th Senatorial District, Tennessee Senate — Mike Bell, 17, and Lou Patten, 10.

9th District, state executive committeeman — Dan Howell, 22; and John S. Stanbery, 6.

9th District, state executive committeewoman -— Emily G. Beaty, 19; and Linda P. Dugan, 5.

The results of the Democratic state primary for 3rd District, U.S. Representative, were Alicia Mitchell, 1; Brenda Freeman Short, 1; Brent Davis Staton, 2; and John Wolfe, 4.

In the Judicial Retention Questions, the vote to retain or replace Sharon Gail Lee as a judge of the Tennessee Supreme Court was 11 to retain and 6 to replace. On the question to retain or replace John W. McClarty as judge of the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Eastern Division, the vote was 11 to retain and 6 to replace.

This vote was a nonscientific poll reflecting the individual views of members of the Liars Club. Two regular members of the Liars Club are presently candidates. They are Steve Lawson and Lou Patten.
