Betty I. Hammer Bishop, 76, a resident of Cleveland, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at her home, surrounded by loving family.

She was born on Dec. 10, 1933, in Athboy, S.D.

She was the daughter of the late Albina Adamek Hammer and Alf Hammer. She was preceded in death by two infant siblings.

She attended school in Lemmon, S.D., and was a proud graduate and salutatorian of the class of 1951.

Following high school, she worked for the Lemmon Clinic as receptionist and bookkeeper. She was proficient at shorthand and maintained that skill throughout her lifetime.

She married Paul Bishop on Feb. 9, 1957. They spent 25 years residing and rearing their children in Bison, S.D., where she was employed by the Grand Electric and West River Telephone Cooperatives as an accountant.

She was a faithful member of the Lemmon Church of God and the Lemmon Church of God Choir. During those years she was also an active member of the “Town and Country” extension program homemaker’s club.

In 1984, the family moved to Huron where she was employed at the Dakotaland Credit Union until her retirement in 1994.

She and her husband, Paul, retired to Cleveland to build their lakeside dream home where she spent many, many hours tending her beautiful flower gardens and decorating her home.

She was a member of Westmore Church of God and a group leader for the women’s Bible study group.

Survivors include her husband and love of her life, Paul Bishop of Cleveland; children: Barbara Carpenter and her husband, Bill, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Susan Bishop of Tacoma, Wash, and Bradley Bishop and his wife, Kerry, of Rapid City, S. D.; her pride and joy were her six grandchildren: Braden, Caylan and Carissa Carpenter and Bethany, Brett and Briauna Bishop; her great-grandson, Landon Carpenter, whom she was happy to meet prior to her passing; sister, Aldene Nash of McMillan, Wash.; and her brother, Norman Hammer of Pacific, Wash.

She loved her “grand-dogs” and considered them part of her family.

The Remembrance of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, from the Westmore Church of God with Pastor Kelvin Page, Pastor Bill Carpenter and Pastor David Bishop officiating.

Braden Carpenter, Caylan Carpenter, Greg Johnson, Tom Reese, Jeff Scoggins and George Warren will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Duane Vaught, William Hale, Jim Sharp, Mike Sharp, Max Morris, Wendell Smith, Willa Smith, Betty Baldree and Lester Haar. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are asked to be at Westmore Church by 12:15 p.m. Friday.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Westmore Church of God.

The funeral will also be held at 2 p.m. (MST) Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, from Lemmon South Dakota Church of God.

Interment will follow in the Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday from the chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, 501 7th Ave. West in Lemmon.

A memorial has been established with the International Myeloma Foundation, www.myeloma.org.
