Central Church of Christ at 200 25th St. in Cleveland will begin a special program on Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. for individuals who struggle with alcohol and/or drug addiction.

This weekly program will last approximately 1 1/2 hours each Tuesday (depending on class size). It will consist of a core 13 classes, similar to the 12 steps in a secular 12-step study, only this is a faith-based program called “CASA” (Christians Against Substance Abuse).

The program will continue for 26 weeks, alternating between regular classes one week and group process class the following week. These group sessions will allow individuals to share their emotions, their struggles, and there success as they deal with their new lives in recovery.

To participate in the group sessions an individual must be enrolled in the CASA classes.

CASA was formed in Corpus Christi, Texas, by a group of Christians in 1988. It is part of the New Life Behavior Ministries which is a curriculum ministry that consist of 10 primary courses. It is a program that uses the Bible as the rule of faith. The principles taught can be understood by anyone interested in learning a better way of living. The curriculum enables the student to produce positive lifestyle changes.

CASA is unique from other 12-step programs as it acknowledges the “Power Source” or “Higher Power” to be the Lord Jesus Christ.

Buck Griffith, the author of the CASA program writes, “When Bill Wilson’s book — ‘The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions’ (often called The Twelve by Twelve) was written, he refused to permit any alteration of “God” in the 12th Step.

“Wilson said, ‘By the time you have worked through to the 12th step you need to know where the power comes from that makes the program work.’ We agree with Mr. Wilson. Understanding God to be a doorknob, table, flagpole or light bulb does not work as well as the One who created the doorknob, table, flagpole, light bulb and everything! This God will never burn out or wear out,” Griffith said.

Each participant who successfully completes the classes will have earned a certificate of achievement at a ceremony at the end of the class sessions. Upon completion of the classes all participants are encouraged to continue attending the group sessions.

A new CASA class will begin every six months. There is no cost to the participants of the CASA class or group sessions.

Tom Harrison, minister of the Central Church of Christ, will be teaching the classes and Thomas Lawson will facilitate the group sessions.
