Wanda L. Mathews, 68, a resident of Birchwood, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, in Florence, S.C., while visiting her daughter.

She was the daughter of the late Ward Hendricks and Annie Colbough Hendricks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie A “Sonny” Mathews; and aughters: Patty Lawson and Faye Gainey.

She was retired from Shaw Industries in Dalton, Ga.

Her life was her family and she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and reading her Bible.

Survivors include her son, Richard A. Mathews of Athens; daughter, Jessica Mathews of Florence; grandchildren: Charlie Lawson of Birchwood, Allen McKinney of Florence, Jason Lawson of Birchwood, Jonathan Mathews of Athens, L.J. Cordell of Birchwood, Amanda Wampler of Georgetown, Misty Hooper of Cleveland and Scarlet Mathews of Athens; several great-grandchildren; brothers: Marvin Hendricks, Ronald Hendricks and Jerry Hendricks, all of Cross City, Fla.; sisters: Frances Valentine, Becky Norris and Tinty Gainey all of Cross City and Ella Hogan of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

A Remembrance of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at the North Ocoee Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes with the Rev. Charles Williams and the Rev. Sammy Hughes officiating.

Interment will follow in McInturf Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
