Lee welcomes new education, library faculty

Lee University welcomes two new professors to the Helen DeVos College of Education, as well as two faculty members to Squires Library, along with 15 others in various departments.

Amy Beavers, lecturer in secondary education and assessment coordinator, is presently enrolled in her final semester of doctoral course work at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Her program of study is educational psychology and research.

While working on her doctoral program, Beavers has been a graduate research associate in the Department of Food Science dealing with the Food Safety Middle School Program. She has three years of classroom teaching experience as a math teacher at Cleveland High School. Beavers earned a bachelors of science from Lee University.

Alex Sandoval joins the Helen DeVos College of Education as teacher in residence. He has several years’ experience in the Georgia public school system where he has worked as a special education teacher, English teacher and autism consultant.

Most recently, Sandoval has been a classroom teacher with NorthStar Educational and Therapeutic Services in Dalton, Ga. NorthStar serves area schools in developing and implementing instruction for students with mild/moderate cognitive functioning abilities.

As a student at Lee, Sandoval was awarded the Jimmy W. Bilbo Excellence in Student Teaching Award. He earned his master of education from the University of Missouri and his bachelor of science from Lee University.

Amy Mercer joins the faculty of Squires Library as lecturer and technical services/serials librarian.

Mercer has been on staff in Squires Library since 2003 as reference assistant. In that position she has gained hands-on experience using the Millennium, OCLC, LC Classification, AACR2, and other computer applications used in the library.

Prior to coming to Lee, Mercer was senior librarian at the Green River Correctional Complex in Kentucky. She also taught in the elementary grades of Muhlenberg County Christian Academy. Mercer earned her master of library science and bachelor of arts from the University of Kentucky.

Diette Ward joins the faculty at Squires Library as lecturer and instruction/electronics resources librarian.

Ward has been on staff at Squires Library since January 2007. She has served as reference assistant, interlibrary services assistant and has coordinated library instruction.

Ward’s library experience also includes five years at the University of California, Riverside Library, where she served as administrative assistant and public relations coordinator. She has a master of library science from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a bachelor of music education from Lee University.
