If communications and other necessities are ironed out, Bradley County Election Commission members are considering reviving early voting at the Bi-Lo location located on McGrady Drive.

It has been several years since the portable early voting unit was utilized, but according to the commission, the location produced a high early vote use — just about producing the numbers at Bradley Square Mall.

The commission met Tuesday morning and took a field trip to the Bradley County Road Department where they surveyed the unit and considered doing some very minor maintenance before possibly placing it back in service.

Communications and computer hook-ups were really the only concern.

Milan Blake opposed the refurbishing during a vote after the commissioners returned to the Election Commission offices.

Blake was concerned about storms which may pose a safety issue and the fact the portable unit would be free-standing in the parking lot of the Bi-Lo complex.

Utilities are already in place at the site.

Commission members voted to move forward with refurbishing the portable unit, considering the structural and technological need which need to be met in time for early voting in the State and Federal elections beginning Oct. 13.

They felt the use of the portable would be the most cost-effective and the percentage of voters who used the Bi-Lo site was greater.

Officials will meet again Sept. 21 to talk about progress regarding the project.
