The Cleveland freshman football team managed to get by a tough Hixson team Monday as Jackson Earle and D.J. Jones again stepped up to play well at quarterback.

Former starter Austin Herink has been elevated to fill in at quarterback for the Cleveland High School varsity, after junior QB Chad Voytik suffered a compound fracture of a finger two weeks ago.

Cleveland’s offensive line played well against Hixson as Reggie Mills, Jonathon Terrero and D.J. Jackson sparked the rushing attack. Defensively, Cleveland caused several turnovers and had a couple of pass interceptions with one returned for a touchdown to end the game.

The Cleveland freshmen will play again Monday, playing host to Walker Valley at 6 p.m.
