She was born April 13, 1943, in Chattanooga, to Willie Mae Wright Chambers and Carter William Chambers.
She was a member of New Enon Baptist Church, where she served faithfully and was baptized at Pilgrim Baptist Church at an early age. She was married to Orlando Smith. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt.
She was a licensed cosmetologist and was retired from Pillsbury Corporation prior to pursuing other endeavors.
She was a graduate of Howard High School’s class of 1961 and was a Howard Hustling Tiger Majorette.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orlando Smith; her parents; three brothers: Harry Lee Lindsey, Charles Herman Lindsey and Cortez “Winkie” Greer; one nephew, Kevin L. Talley; one niece, Sandra Lindsey Campbell; and uncle John H. Taylor.
Her life legacy will continue through her family: daughters: Theresa (Larry) Gopher of Huntsville, Ala., Staci Anderson of Chattanooga; sons: Vincent “Bo” (Avis) Chambers of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Kenneth P. Mays of Atlanta; her beloved grandchildren: Alexis Anderson of Chattanooga and Kevin Chambers of Lawrenceville; aunts: Gloria Wallace and Grace Lowery, both of Chattanooga; and Joann Cousin of Chicago; brothers: James (Mildred) Grier of San Diego, Roderick M. Greer of Huntsville, Ala., William “Sonny” Chambers of Chattanooga; one sister, Carolyn (Thomas) Smith of Chattanooga. Her motherly love extended beyond her natural children to the nieces and nephews she raised: Joi and Cody Gopher of Huntsville, Ala., Tracey Tolbert and Tammy Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., Patricia Talley, William Chambers III, and Quincy Chambers of Chattanooga; goddaughter, Tiara Mitchell; devoted friends: Marsha Hayes and Roberta Marshall, and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 this evening, Oct. 7, 2010, at the New Enon Baptist Church, 2302 Wilcox Ave.
The service will be at noon Friday at New Monumental Baptist Church, at 901 Woodmore Lane in Chattanooga. The Rev. Doctor Andrew J. Bullard Jr. will be the eulogist.
Interment will be at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Flowers may be sent today after 4 p.m. to the New Enon Baptist Church and Friday after 11 a.m. to the New Monumental Baptist Church.
