Officials with Hamilton County 911 said the crash was reported at 5:27 a.m.
A blown tire was believed to be the cause, according to initial 911 reports.
Seventeen people on the bus were treated for a variety of injuries.
Hamilton County Emergency Medical Service paramedics attended to the injured and it was unclear at the time how many had been transported to local medical facilities; however, none were flown for treatment.
According to 911, it was not known at the time of the initial report where the bus trip originated, or its destination.
Dispatchers said the crash occurred “very close inside Hamilton County, just prior to the Chattanooga city limits.”
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will be in charge of the crash investigation, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Aiding at the scene were a number of emergency first response agencies but no out-of-county mutual aid was utilized.
Tennessee Department of Transportation and others were on the scene to help clean up the wreckage, according to reports.
The southbound lanes were reportedly cleared by mid-morning.
