Johnny Lovell Maupin

Johnny Lovell Maupin, 91, of Cleveland, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023.

She was born on May 13, 1931, in Birchwood, to the late Holman and Cecil Lovell. She graduated from Bradley High School, where she served as the manager of the Bradley Bearettes’ basketball team. Johnny retired after 35 years at South Central Bell, starting as a telephone operator and finishing her career as a supervisor. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church for 80 years and during her time there she learned to play the piano as a teenager and served as an accompanist at the church for many years.

Johnny loved to travel the world and her travels took her to Hawaii on nine occasions. She was a fan of Elvis Presley and avid reader of all genres of books. Above all things, Johnny’s faith in the Lord remained at the forefront of everything she did. She was dearly loved and will forever be remembered for her generous spirit and caring for those around her.

In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her son, George Maupin; husband, James Maupin; and siblings, Joan Lovell Still, Jess Lovell and Connie Lovell Clark.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her son, Tom Maupin and his wife, Lesa, of Franklin; daughter, Betsy Gentry and her husband, Bryan, who Johnny said, “was the best thing Betsy got from East Tennessee State University;” sister, Wanda Lovell Wilkey, who was her “Rock;” sister-in-law and friend of 75 years, Joyce Maupin; grandchildren, Brooke Gentry Snyder (Chris), John Maupin (Jayne), Julie Maupin and Jeffrey Maupin (Mitzi); great-grandchildren, Zoie, Jabari, Addie, Jackson, Annie, Peyton, Harrison and Sawyer; special nieces, Adelia Clark Hall and Greta Clark Frazier; extra special nephew, Lukas Hall; extra special niece, Lauren Jean Hall; and numerous additional nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Johnny’s family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, at Hopewell Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life service will follow at 2 p.m. and burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Revs. Jonathan Kyle and Steve Huff will be officiating. Pallbearers will be John Maupin, Jeffrey Maupin, Chris Snyder, Lukas Hall, David Lovell, Justin Wilkey and Jason Bean.

In lieu of flowers, Johnny’s family requests that donations be made to the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery Fund.
