Posted

Cleveland native Larry R. Presswood died on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, and joined our Lord Jesus and Savior in Heaven.

Larry was born on June 11, 1942, to Frank and Gertrude Presswood. He grew up in a tight-knit neighborhood area of East Cleveland, also called Sixth Ward.

Larry graduated from Bradley Central High School and then received a bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State and a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He worked in urban planning and commercial real estate his entire life.

He worked for the State of Tennessee in Nashville and then Cookeville before returning to Cleveland to work for the city and was instrumental in the planning and implementation of many public works projects in the city. Larry then went on to work in the private sector for Hoskins Land Development Company before starting his own commercial real estate company, Presswood Real Estate, and Business Brokerage.

Larry enjoyed life. He was very sociable and always up for a good conversation at the Elks Lodge and good food at the Bistro, or both. He also enjoyed his many breakfasts with friends around town to discuss the issues of the day. Larry was an avid traveler his entire life and traveled all over the country and many places overseas. Larry had a great love for the city of Cleveland, and had a great deal of knowledge of its past.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Chad Presswood; sisters: Jean Presswood, Lynda Presswood Suggs, Evelyn Presswood Lee, Helen Presswood Rose and Virginia “Jenny” Presswood Davis; and brother, Bill Presswood.

Larry is survived by his son, Wayne (Karen) Black; and four grandchildren: Madison Black, Adam Black, Mary Ann Black and Sarah Black; nephews: Victor Lee, Jimmy (Carolyn) Ellis, Jerry Ellis, and Lance Suggs; nieces: Jana (Waymon) Casteel, Judy Shamblin, Connie Presswood Golden, and Sheila Presswood; along with numerous extended family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service is planned for 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Big Spring United Methodist Church, 1196 Hardwick St. S.E., Cleveland, TN 37311.
